Drinks, as we called it, are categorized in the food and beverage industries. On top of what to eat, we are troubled also by what to drink.
Water is a scarce resource; it is also exist in two extreme situation -droughts and flood. Both situations portray the importance and damaging effect of water. Droughts restrict the amount of water that we need for our daily activities including our body need for water, shower and farming activities. Flooding affects human activities and life including farming activities. Flooding affects most crop returns while flourish crops that survive under water such as rice paddy.
Today, our water source came from a water reservoir. The presence of well and rivers as a water source have dramatically decreased with modernization. Water, as we known, are processed water. It is not as pure as it used to be. Provincial and municipal law and regulations ensure it is processed prior to delivery for food safety purposes. Our tap water is processed, filtered and fluoridated before it reach to our body.
Water are being packaged in multiple formats for the ease of consumers. Tap water can be further processed using reserved osmosis and made into mineral water. It is a completely different product compared to spring water. Spring water are taken from high mountain and said to be purer in terms of natural minerals content.
Water are being sold as flavored waters. Water with slight flavors, because we like a little flavors in addition to the plain water we have. These flavored waters might take advantage of natural flavor extract or artificial flavoring agents. We can find multiple flavors ranging from berry, orange, lemon and so on. Everything made possible with food technology.
Juices are one of my favorite. Juices take advantage of fruits and vegetable that contain high amount of water. Juicing provide the benefit of eating the fruits or vegetable minus the fibre and loss of vitamins, minerals and other bioactive components. Juices can be made from concentrate or directly bottled right away after juicing. In any way, the addition of coloring and flavoring often follow to provide customer with product consistency. After fruits and vegetables are crops that have seasonal differences.
Tea and coffee are an interesting one. Tea are my top beverage. It contains a milder caffeine content compared to coffee and functional benefits such as weight loss, clear thinking and mind. Coffee, are most preferred drinks for many others; perhaps because others like it, I started to drink more of it. Tea and coffee are broiled with hot water and best consumed as they are hot and warm. It provides the warm feeling that are unique.
The most popular drinks perhaps are flavored drinks with tonnes of sugar, plus minus caffeine called energy drinks, soda and pops. Kids simply love it and adult love them love. ADMIT it, we love them. It is found everywhere on the aisle of each grocery store and convenience store. It is a cheap drink, found everywhere and give pleasure to the drinkers. Who wouldn't like it? Calories and toxic sugar content are associated with these drinks. It contains more sugar than water.
The list can go on and on... What can I say about the wonderful drinks we have? The market is giving us what we crave for. As long as there is a demand for it, the drinks would be there to serve our needs. I was looking at an infographic last week that describe how we contribute to the huge food corporation even if we look at healthy foods. Food corporation spent effort and money to learn what the consumer needs. Regardless of how you switch to a healthier version of a product, there would still be a share for a huge corporation. Forget about who is profiting, start reaping the benefit of your drink choice for your health. While most of what we input into our body is processed in a manner, there is still a chance to choose for better health.
Appreciate water as an essence of our life. Choose wisely what you drink and what is in it. Sometimes, lesser ingredient might meant better returns. Flavors are tempting but beware of the ingredients found within the drinks. Sugars remained as an ingredient to watched. This International Water Day, take a look at your drinks and discover.
