I was reading a piece of article from two sport nutritionists where it strikes me at the very sentence that sounds like this "Food scientist create franken foods, from whole foods". While I agree with their nutrition concepts, I could not understand how does that came from.
Here is why:
Food innovation modified structure of food and adding a whole lots of ingredients that doesn't belong naturally to a whole foods but it adds value to the food product -from innovative solution, preservation of food, quality and food safety.
Health Canada came up with what nutritionists and dietitians regards as a "better indication of the nutrient values of foods".
The new proposed nutrition facts panels are consumer friendly- educating consumer what to be expected of the daily nutrient value. 5% DV is regarded as little and 15% DV or more is a lot. As a consumer, it is a lot simpler for me to compare nutrient value when I know less than 5% is considered less and more than 15% is consider more.
One of the "interesting" topic now is the added sugar. The difference between added sugar and natural sugar is that added sugar is added during processing. Food processors uses different sources of sugar to cater to their marketing needs. While many uses processed sugars, some food processors who market food as natural do uses alternative sugars from fruits such as date paste, honey etc. From a consumer point of view, to be able to know what contribute to the sugar level meant being able to choose natural source of sugars.
If this proposal were to be approved, it meant food processors do not only spend money to comply for the new label regulations but it opens up formulation transparency to all the consumers. Some food processors might even need to come up with consumer's friendly formulation to cater for the rising demand for less added sugars.
Food such as milk chocolate, yogurt, juices and drinks would be the obvious products when it comes to added sugar. Would this boost up the use of sweeteners or sugar substitute to lower a formulation's added sugar?
Ya, right. This is another weight management, supplement selling blogs. Look carefully because I am not going to sell you anything. My purpose is to provide some background information on we can manage our body weight.
Girls like me- love being slim. Because we look gorgeous that way, fitting in the nice dresses and gowns. Spectacular but the problem is we love the butter cookies, the cream cheese, the cake and deserts. Yum... yum...
There are some sufferer of food indulgence that have little self-control. Then, we had a little bit extra calories put on and our clothes just don't fit. We grew plump. OMG, nightmares starts.
The basis of weight management focus on calories, not just calories intake but more of it is calories absorbed by our body. It is easy to calculate the extra calories we had. Most weight-concious women knows the formula.
So, what do you do with the extra calories? Find ways to burn them- by exercising and taking supplements that capable of aiding fat metabolism like CLA (Conjugated Linolenic Acid) that promotes burning of fat more rapidly and stimulate leptin, a signal to tell our brain that we are full, stop eating. Hence, promote satiety and satisfaction with less amount of food, less amount of calories.
Green tea also a good complement to our dietary habit because it promotes satiety and help us feel full faster.
Another way is to have the fat go through our body, minimizing the absorption of fat into our body. Fiber is an excellent companion for dieting because they make you full PLUS fiber binds with fatty acids before it gets removed from our body with the fat it binds.
Any supplements that make you lose appetite (eating lesser), burns fat faster and remove fats from your body work weight management. Want a better result, a good tips is to moderate your calories intake and have smaller food portion at a time.

Today, I witnessed what called product loyalty, which every product manager likes to see. (Unfortunately, it wasn't my product :(
Back to the concept of brand loyalty.
Loyalty = Grabbing a product from the shelves without second doubts.
It is amazing how it happens. Most people came with a shopping list and they make sure NOTHING except the items on their shopping list DISTRACT them. Shorter words, no distraction. Gosh, two surprise- first, shopping list and second, no distraction.
People are so educated that shopping list became a useful tools. I am those who never follow my shopping list. I am always distracted by new food product around me. Just the impact of being a food technologist.
I see how people walked by the salad section- just a particular brand and grab them. No second look at the price or other products. It worked only for a particular brand and not its competitor. This brand must have been a successful one. Why? Colorful labels, says it is organic and it have been on the shelves for a long time. And that business is like automatically generating revenue by having loyal consumers.
Loyal customer- the dream of every brand manager. Seen any of this situation or are you the one?
You do not need to make a dietary changes. Just add-on!
Check out my new ads for an imaginary product that you can add-on to your food.
Absolutely no need of getting rid of your favorite food.
Just add-on foods.
Simply easy to add-on premixes of grains, protein powders etc.
Say yes, to a healthy diet. Say yes, to add-on products.
Isn't that attractive? I am attracted to the scheme and strategy. Who wouldn't want to be healthy without life-style changes. Adding in a little bits of extra healthy food, minimal work is almost equivalent to be effortless.
These are marketing strategy that works. People are afraid of changes but adding in just mean add in. If it taste good and it doesn't affect what I ate, why not?
Remarks: I don't sell nor distribute these products. They are based on my opinion due to my recent encounter with these types of products. They are really easily to consume and taste fantastically good.
